Where are the Maldives Islands?
The Maldives is a South Asian country that is close to India and Sri Lanka. In all, this territory has 1,196 islands bathed by the Indian Ocean, with just over 200 of them inhabited. Due to its location, the time zone of the Maldives Islands is GMT+5, that is, it is 8 hours ahead of the official time of our country.
The native inhabitants of this region speak a language called Dhivehi, but as this is a destination that receives many tourists, it is not difficult to find people who speak fluent English – this is even easier on the main islands of the country. Italian is also another language that is spoken by a good part of the Maldivian population since there are a large number of Italian citizens who go to this territory.
Due to its proximity to India and Sri Lanka, the Maldives have great cultural influence from these countries, which is directly reflected in their food, music, and clothing. A large part of the native population of the region is of the Muslim religion and they keep the customs of their belief, which also impacts some rules for visitors.
It is not on all beaches that the sea can be enjoyed with the same swimwear. Before taking a dip, it is necessary to check if there is any sign prohibiting the use of swimming trunks and bikinis. If this is the case, it will be necessary to use a more closed piece on top.
The ideal is to find the Bikini Beaches (places reserved for the deliberate use of women’s and men’s bathing suits) and enjoy them without fear and within the law, while still obeying local customs.
Officially, the currency used in the country is the Maldivian Rupee or Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but there are others that are accepted in most parts of the territory. On the main islands, resorts, and large restaurants, US Dollars, Pounds Sterling and Euros are accepted. Additionally, international cards may also be an option if you are not at a local stall.
Do you need a visa to enter the Maldives Islands?
Yea! you need a visa to cross the border of this archipelago, but in this case, the process to obtain one is simple. It is not necessary to pay to request this document and it allows you to stay up to 30 days enjoying the paradisiacal landscapes of the Maldives.
When you arrive in the country, your passport will be validated and from there, just leave the airport to enjoy all the delicious tours!
Other documents required for the trip
In addition to the tourist visa for the Maldives Islands, you will have to worry about some other documents:
- passport with at least 30 days validity;
- International Vaccination Card with proof that you have taken your dose against Yellow Fever;
- travel insurance – which is not mandatory in the country, but avoids several problems;
- International Driver’s License, if you wish to drive around the country.
Although the CNH is valid in many regions, such as Mexico, there are others that require an international card or even a Green Card – which we have already explained in detail in an exclusive post on the subject!
